One denim shirt, five outfits

One denim shirt, five outfits

Few pieces work as hard as a good denim shirt. It is a shirt, a light jacket and a layering piece all at once, it softens with every wash and it goes with almost every colour. If you buy one item to stretch a small wardrobe, this is a strong candidate. Below are five outfits built around a single shirt, followed by advice on choosing the right wash and fit.

Outfit 1: over a dress

A denim shirt worn open over a simple dress is one of the easiest outfits there is. The shirt casualises a dress that might otherwise feel too formal for the daytime, and it adds sleeves for cooler mornings.

  • Best dresses: plain black, navy or a small floral print; knee-length or midi.
  • Shoes: white trainers, high-tops, ankle boots or flat sandals.
  • Tip: roll the sleeves to just below the elbow so the shirt looks deliberate rather than borrowed.

Our outfit idea with floral high-top wedges is a full example of this formula for a casual family party.

Outfit 2: with black jeans (and the “Canadian tuxedo” question)

Denim on denim has a nickname, the “Canadian tuxedo”, and a reputation for being hard to get right. The simplest way to avoid looking head-to-toe uniform is to make the two pieces clearly different. A light or mid-blue shirt with black jeans creates contrast and looks modern.

Some guidelines if you do want blue on blue:

  • Contrast the washes: pale shirt with dark jeans, or the reverse. Two identical blues look like a boiler suit.
  • Break it up: a belt, a knit over the shoulders or a jacket on top separates the two halves.
  • Keep the rest simple: neutral shoes, minimal accessories.

With black jeans, tuck the shirt in loosely at the front, add a black belt and finish with Chelsea boots or loafers.

Outfit 3: tucked into a skirt

Tucking a denim shirt into a skirt gives a polished, slightly retro feel.

  • A midi skirt in a fluid fabric (satin, crepe, pleated polyester) contrasts beautifully with sturdy denim.
  • A leather or faux-leather skirt creates a cooler, more urban look.
  • A pencil skirt with a fully tucked shirt is smart enough for many offices.

Choose a softer, thinner denim for this outfit; heavy shirts bulk up at the waistband. Undo the top two buttons and add a fine gold chain or two, as described in our guide to layering gold jewellery.

Outfit 4: open as a light jacket

On mild days, wear the shirt unbuttoned over a T-shirt, a vest or a fine knit, exactly as you would a lightweight jacket.

  • Underneath: a white or striped T-shirt, a grey marl top or a black ribbed vest.
  • Bottoms: chinos, cargo trousers, black jeans or a denim skirt in a different wash.
  • Shoes: canvas sneakers or loafers.

A slightly oversized fit works best here, since it needs to sit comfortably over another layer. Some people size up for exactly this reason.

Outfit 5: knotted at the waist

Tying the front panels at the waist changes the proportions completely. It defines the waist, shortens the shirt into a cropped top and pairs well with high-waisted pieces.

  • With wide-leg trousers: knot the shirt at the natural waist for a long, lean line.
  • With a slip or midi dress: wear the shirt open and knot the hem over the dress.
  • With shorts or a full skirt in summer: sleeves rolled up, collar open.

Leave a few buttons fastened above the knot so it holds its shape, and tie it slightly to one side for a more relaxed look.

If you can only own one, a mid-blue is the most flexible. It contrasts with both dark jeans and light chinos.

Fit

  • Regular fit: follows the body without clinging; easiest for tucking.
  • Relaxed or oversized: best for wearing open as a jacket or over a dress.
  • Slim fit: neat under a blazer, but less useful as a layering piece.

Check that the shoulder seam sits on or just past your shoulder, that the sleeves can be rolled comfortably and that buttons do not pull across the chest.

Fabric weight

Lighter chambray drapes and tucks easily; heavier denim holds structure and works better as a jacket. A medium weight is the best compromise if you want all five outfits from one shirt.

Caring for it

Wash denim shirts inside out on a cool cycle to slow fading, and hang them to dry rather than tumble-drying. A quick press of the collar and cuffs is usually enough; the body can stay slightly rumpled, which is part of the charm. Over the years the shirt will fade in its own way, and that worn-in look is exactly what makes a denim shirt better with age.
